My three sisters and I were raised on poetry and politics. We had little of the other arts in our home, but a great deal of poetry. We cut our baby teeth on A Child’s Garden of Verses: “I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me, and what can be the use of him is more than I can see.”

In speaking of children, Gibran’s Prophet says: “You may house their bodies, but not their souls, for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.”
But it was our dreams, the actual dreams, or ideals, of a handful of parents and teachers that created the Blacksburg New School.
